Memorable Memorial Day Weekend at Myrtle Beach

June 12 Update- My Myrtle Beach photo that begins this post was a winner in today’s Post and Courier photography contest. The topic is “Summertime.”

It was fun to return to Myrtle Beach for the first time in many years. For the Memorial Day weekend, it made a nice getaway that was not too far away.

We had an oceanfront room on the 15th floor at Marriott’s Residence Inn. We were there two nights…

…and Three days. Alesia and I spent most of the time on the beach. The weather was perfect!

That's the hotel behind me. It has 18 floors. We were on the 15th, Room 1508 to be exact.

This is a really nice hotel! I would definitely recommend it.

The water temperature was very comfortable for taking a dip. We brought our favorite beach chairs and I had a good book to read (Harlan Coben's "The Final Detail" to be exact). So life is good!

Memorial Day 2021- Begins Summer and Our “New Normal”

We returned on Memorial Day to our favorite spot on the beach at Sullivan’s Island. It would be another memorable visit and a nice unofficial start to summer.

And with great relief, things continue to return to some normalcy after nearly a year and a half under the deadly and disruptive COVID-19 pandemic

Folly Beach Fishing Pier Update

We hit Folly Beach on Friday of the long Memorial Day weekend. It was our son Joseph’s birthday and he came down from New York City to spend his special day with us.

I also wanted to see what was going on with the landmark fishing pier that opened in 1995. What’s going on is that it’s coming down.

Charleston County Parks and Recreation, which oversees the pier, announced last year that the structure would have to come down. But the good news is it will be replaced by a better pier with concrete pilings and other improvements and amenities.

The current pier's wooden pilings are not in good shape. They've been infilitrated by destructive little critters called shipworms or marine borers.

Memorable Memorial Day Weekend Beach Visit

Sunday we wanted to hit the beach for the first time this year but feared fierce traffic delays and mobs of fellow sun worshipers at beaches closer to Charleston.

So we made the just more than an hour drive to Edisto Island and we’re glad we did, finding the traffic light, and parking easy close to the sands.

The beach here was pretty crowded but the tide was going out so “social distancing” was not a problem.

The skies were clear with temperatures in the low 80s. Just a pleasant few hours all around. We didn’t want to get too sunburn so we’re careful not to stay too long. The large American flag near where we set up our chairs added to the positive Memorial Day vibe. And the water was very refreshing too!
