Snowfall!

Last weekend was a memorable one in the Charleston area. It rarely snows here so when the local meteorologists start to talk about a significant chance of the white stuff, we get excited.

This was the scene at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31. The forecasts were correct. The weather prognosticators were so confident that no snow would have been quite embarrassing.

Well, I saw the writing on the wall. Friday at around noon, I got in some tennis practice, knowing my regular Saturday morning game with friends was in doubt.

When the sun came up Sunday, we had beautiful white snow to go with a beautiful blue sky.

White Delight- Rare Snowfall Blankets Our Area

Local TV meteorologists were predicting it for several days and around 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 it began. What began? SNOW!

This is a very rare occurrence in the Charleston area.

The last major snowfall we had was seven years ago, Jan. 3-4, 2018. Check out my post from then!

So Tuesday night it began sleeting.  Around 8:30 the temperature dipped to below freezing, and the white stuff started to fall.

It did not take long to accumulate, covering the No. 15 fairway and green at Coosaw Creek Country Club where we live.

For Joseph’s fiancée Tamy, just a few days removed from her native Brazil, this was her first encounter with snow.

She had also never before seen a raccoon. This one came to our porch to eat some cat food we had out for a couple feral cats we have adopted (more or less).

At daybreak the next morning a winter wonderland is revealed.

Survival of the Sago Palms!

It seems like it took forever but Alesia and I are so pleased that the Sago Palms that decorate our front yard area are back and as beautiful as ever- if not more so considering what happened to them in January.

On January 3, the Charleston area had a very rare heavy snowfall. We had five inches or so at our house.  See my Winter Storm Grayson post here.

While beautiful in many ways, we didn't realize how hard the snow would be on our lovely Sago Palms.

Rare Heavy Snowfall Starts New Year in Charleston Area

January 3, 2018 has gone into the history books as the Charleston area's third deepest snow accumulation. Winter Storm Grayson dropped from four to seven inches (in Summerville) of the white stuff along Coastal South Carolina that Wednesday afternoon.

I have lived in this area since 1990 and it was by far the most ever snow!

Yesterday I put together a short video (two minutes) showing my snowstorm highlights. Check it out!

I took even more photographs with my iPhone7 and Canon DSLR.  I will be adding some of my favorite snow images in the days ahead.  And here they are!
