Edisto Island Fixer Upper- Glass Half Full or Empty?

This may be the saddest mailbox I’ve ever seen!

Its “mouth” is open as if saying “I deserve better than this.”

The location is 7944 Steamboat Landing Rd. off Highway 174 on Edisto Island

The poor mailbox caught my eye a few weeks after a beach visit. Saturday during a drive out this way we stopped by so I could photograph this box and the property behind it.

The old red house and trailer next to it are not much to look at either.

Vacant and seemingly abandoned the property has been neglected for who knows how many years.

The house is barely visible from the road. If not safe from the growth devouring it, a strong fence offers some protection.

But for this eyesore amid some pretty orange and yellow flowers there may be hope on the horizon.

Some online research reveals the property, an impressive 3.74 acres, sold in early September for $75,000. The Redfin site linked above has a better picture of the house than I was able to get.

My posting of some of these photos on the “South Carolina Rambles” Facebook site found that at least a few people believe that’s a bargain price.

OK, I realize promotion and marketing may require some hype. Quoting from Zillow, Trulia and Redfin: “Great location on Edisto Island (if your glasses are rose-colored). Just one mile to recently upgraded Steamboat Landing boat ramp and fishing pier (yes that’s a plus). Just a short drive to Edisto Beach  (yes, but too far for a bike, golf cart or walk), 3.74 acres to build your Edisto Home and enjoy all that the island has to offer (the trailer is included we hope). Homes on the property are being sold as is.” (you think?)

Best of luck to the buyer who someone on Facebook says is from that other Carolina- North.

You do have some beautiful live oak trees across the street and a vigilant hound dog next door.

Clear out, clean up and rebuild. This neglected property could again be an attractive home and property on a  well- respected and historic piece of Edisto Island. Hope so anyway!

Steamboat Landing Road has a lot of history and a beautiful pier (above) on the North Edisto River. So the dilapidated property featured in this post may be a diamond in the rough. I'll have to check back there in the months and years ahead to see if that diamond gets some polish.
