New Folly Beach Pier Update

Our first visit to Folly Beach in about a year found the big fishing pier replacement project looking that much closer to the image in this rendering.

When we saw the construction last Sunday it looked like around 50 percent of the old wooden pier had been replaced. You see in this photograph the new gray concrete base extending out to sea. Shipworm infestation became a problem with the old wood pilings that date back to 1995, necessitating a redux.

The new $14 million pier is expected to be finished in Spring 2023, according to Charleston Parks and Recreation officials.

The new pier will be 1,039 feet long. That is the equivalent of 3.5 football fields, approximately.  That is a tad shorter than the old pier, which was 1,045 (and cost $3.4 million to build in 1995).

the new structure will be a bit taller and wider than the previous one.

A gift shop and observation platform are now open on the section closer to land and the Tides Folly Beach Hotel

Also open is Pier 101, the beachfront restaurant located at the base of the pier.

As the work continues slowly but surely, beachgoers are still able to enjoy the sands near and under the pier.

I must admit I have never been on the pier to fish or to just check it out. But I will definitely pay the fee (I believe there will be a fee) to explore it when it opens next spring.

Folly Beach is called “The Edge of America” but on this nice summer day it was not edgy, just very peaceful and chill.

This woman did not need a beach towel, the soft sand was fine for her.

Our Joseph wanted to come to Folly. He likes the waves here more than at Sullivan’s Island where we usually go.

He lives in New York City.

We did have a faux pas when we left the beach. An expensive chair was accidentally left by the street where we parked. We didn’t realize that until we arrived home, 40 or so minutes later. Alesia and Joseph drove back and, good news, it was found.

What a good son he is!

I look forward to returning to Folly n the months ahead to see how the new pier is progressing!

No laughing matter! Well I guess it is to these Laughing gulls perched on the fishing pier.
